The two routes
They are different products with different rules, timelines and outcomes. Which one is open to you is decided by your qualification, not by your ambition.
Ausbildung
Residence Act §16a
- What it is
- Paid vocational training with a German company and a Berufsschule, the vocational school.
- Entry
- A school leaving certificate. No German university entrance qualification is needed.
- German needed
- B1 is typical. Healthcare roles usually need B2, and often the telc Deutsch B2 Pflege certificate.
- How long
- Two to three years.
- Ends with
- A state-recognised vocational qualification.
Duales Studium
Residence Act §16b
- What it is
- A Bachelor's degree programme combined with work at a company, under a contract with that company. Pay varies, and is often comparable to an Ausbildung allowance.
- Entry
- A recognised university entrance qualification, the Hochschulzugangsberechtigung or HZB. An Indian Class 12 certificate does not confer one. Obtaining one usually takes a further year of study; the check says whether an exception applies to your answers.
- German needed
- B2 to C1 is typical.
- How long
- Three years.
- Ends with
- A Bachelor's degree.
Both are lawful routes under the German Residence Act, and each has its own visa. The check tells you which one your qualification opens, and names the rule it used.
